So often, we teach teachers to “know” the lives of their children outside of school, and that can be good work as teachers learn about brothers and sisters and pets and favorite video games. But I do not believe that we can be fully educating kids for their lives in which they’re responsible for one another and for speaking on their own behalf unless teachers also understand these dimensions of children’s lives outside of school.
