Learning the Rules of the Preschool Application Game – NYTimes.com
Another variation in the “getting my child into an elite Manhatten preschool”, essay, this from a mother who claims the wisdom of having crossed class borders herself.
“I could partake in the reality, but not take it too seriously. I could show Zee that one could simultaneously question and participate in social norms. It struck me that like Zee, I belonged to a different class from my parents’, yet I’d still adopted from them the outsider mentality that I so valued. My parents had passed it on through their critical perspective and their humor. The trick of this endeavor — and, I guessed, many parenting predicaments — was that I had to learn to play by the rules, but remember that it was a game.”
