I think this just reflects the general public’s ignorance of class issues in the US. Like people who think as they said, that union members are all middle class. In the nineties, there was a huge fight here in the Twin Cities to allow hotel employees to unionize. They were being paid minimum wage. The people who clean up the middle and owning class people’s toilets are not middle class.
Fox has pulled similar stunts on different issues (I’m thinking I’ve heard a similar ignorant banter around sexuality and gender identity, for instance).
